Why Sleep Matters

Sleep is when the body carries out most of its structural repair, hormonal recovery, and neural adaptation from training. Training and nutrition create the stimulus and provide the raw materials — sleep is when adaptation actually occurs.

Sleep restriction affects performance and body composition through several mechanisms. Muscle protein synthesis rates decline with inadequate sleep. Growth hormone release, which is concentrated in slow-wave sleep, is reduced when sleep is cut short or disrupted. Appetite-regulating hormones shift toward increased hunger and reduced satiety. Cognitive function and motivation affect training intensity and effort output.

Research has shown that individuals sleeping five to six hours per night demonstrate substantially reduced resistance training adaptations compared to those sleeping seven to nine hours. The magnitude of this effect rivals the impact of significant differences in protein intake or calorie surplus.

BodEvo applies a continuous sleep modifier to strength projections, nutrient partitioning estimates, and body composition splits. Eight hours returns a neutral 1.0× modifier. Each hour below eight reduces the modifier by 0.10, down to a minimum of 0.40× below five hours. Each hour above eight increases the modifier slightly, up to 1.15× at nine or more hours.

This is not a claim that more sleep is always better — individual sleep needs vary. It reflects the consensus that most adults, particularly those in hard training, benefit from seven to nine hours of consistent, quality sleep. Supplement use, increased protein, or larger surpluses cannot compensate for chronically poor sleep when it comes to training adaptation.
