Supplement Importance vs Effectiveness
Importance and effectiveness are two distinct dimensions that can move independently, and understanding both helps you make better decisions about what to include in a stack.
Effectiveness describes how reliably a supplement produces a measurable outcome when studied under controlled conditions. Strong evidence means multiple well-designed trials consistently show a meaningful effect. Mixed evidence means results are inconsistent or effect sizes are small. Limited or low evidence means either few studies exist, studies are poorly designed, or effects are not distinguishable from placebo.
Importance describes how significant that supplement is to your specific situation. A supplement with strong evidence for a benefit you do not need is low importance. A supplement that fills a genuine gap in your nutrition is high importance even if the absolute effect size is modest.
For example:
Creatine monohydrate has strong effectiveness evidence and is absolutely essential for lifters who do not already eat large amounts of red meat. Its importance matches its effectiveness.
Vitamin B12 has strong effectiveness evidence for treating B12 deficiency and supporting neurological health. For someone eating animal products regularly, it is low importance. For someone on a fully plant-based diet, it is high importance. Same supplement, different importance based on context.
BCAAs have moderate effectiveness evidence in certain specific conditions — mainly fasted training or genuinely low total protein intake. For someone already meeting daily protein needs from whey or food, BCAAs are low importance because the need they address is already covered.
This is why the supplement library and stack builder both show importance and effectiveness as separate ratings. A supplement with strong evidence but low relevance to your situation should not take priority over one with moderate evidence that addresses a real gap.
Importance should guide what you add. Effectiveness should inform your confidence in what to expect.
