How to Estimate Body Fat %
An exact body fat percentage is not required to use this tool. A reasonable estimate improves calorie projections, body composition tracking, and the Katch-McArdle BMR formula. Precision matters less than using a consistent method over time.
Progress photo method: Take front, side, and rear photos in relaxed posture under consistent lighting, at the same time of day. Compare against established visual reference charts for your sex. This is free, reproducible, and accurate enough for planning purposes. The primary limitation is that lighting and posture variations can make the same body look meaningfully different across photos.
AI estimation: Ask an AI tool to estimate your body fat percentage from photos. Request a range rather than a single number. Provide a prompt such as: "Please estimate my body fat percentage as a range based on these photos. Describe the visual markers you are using." Treat the result as a rough estimate. AI tools can reasonably identify whether someone is closer to 12% or 25%, but they cannot measure actual adipose tissue volume.
DEXA scan: A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry scan provides the most reliable body composition data available outside of research settings. It measures fat mass, lean mass, and bone density. It is accurate to roughly plus or minus two to three percentage points. The main limitations are cost and access.
Skinfold calipers: When used by a trained practitioner following a validated protocol, calipers can be reasonably accurate. Results vary significantly based on measurer skill and the protocol used. Single-site calipers are less reliable than multi-site protocols.
Hydrostatic weighing and Bod Pod: Both compare well to DEXA for accuracy and are more accessible than DEXA at many universities and sports facilities. Error ranges are typically plus or minus two to three percentage points.
Bioelectrical impedance (home scales, handheld devices): These vary widely in accuracy depending on hydration status, food intake, and device quality. They can show large day-to-day variation for the same person. They are most useful for tracking trends over weeks rather than for snapshot estimates.
The most practical approach for most users: take consistent progress photos, use a visual reference chart, and re-estimate every four to six weeks under the same conditions. A range of plus or minus three to four percentage points is good enough for the calculations in this tool.
